LDS Triple Combination The Book of Mormon Doctrine and Covenants The Pearl of Great Price edition by LDS Church Religion Spirituality eBooks Reviews

I received my Quad in a very timely manner and was pleased with it's condition. I only wish I could have seen a page or known the publishers date becasue this is an old, out of date book. The snnotations are down the middle instead of along the bottom. This makes it very difficult toread. Also the page numbering is different than most books. It is usually easy to find a Bible reference becasue all the pages are the same no matter which book you are looking at ( a Quad or the Book of Morman )
I received the 'triple' in a class back at seminary a few years ago and just because of its sheer size was not looking forward to reading it. But, I finally decided to get around to it. I hate for books that are on my shelf to be ignored for great length. I want to first offer up my own theological background. I am your standard American Evangelical Christian, so I will be speaking from my own thoughts and presuppositions. At the same time I wanted to talk about the BOM as a piece of literature as well. I mean no disrespect to anyone of the Mormon faith - but I have no intention of trying to simply be nice for the sake of being nice.
First, as a piece of literature, the BOM is many things. It's flat-out atrocious to read, extremely repetitive, tedious, verbose. In other words, it's flat out boring and quite a chore to read. This is not to say there are not some interesting parts. It's just to say that the quality of literature and Joseph Smith's writing style (yes I am assuming Joseph Smith wrote the whole thing - as is plainly obvious) of storytelling is extremely difficult to pour through- not in the sense of difficulty of material intellectually, but rather its tediousness.
Some parts of the stories of the BOM are interesting, from a literary standpoint, but the writing is so awful, that it ruins any otherwise interesting fiction that these stories could be. On the flip side, the DC's are more entertaining to get into. IMO, this is because the DC are more straightforward. Compared to the actual BOM, which is obviously a fiction by a single author, the DC's are more open. The BOM possesses a quality of someone purposely trying to mimic a religious text, and by nature has an inherent quality of forgery. The DC's, on the other hand, are more open and accessible, because they don't contain this quality. They are more like reports of 'revelations' that Smith or others have. In this sense they are a bit more interesting to read, and contain some of the more interesting doctrines of the Mormon faith.
This sense is also found in Smith's 'translation' of the Book of Abraham or Moses, where (aside from clearly copying straight from OT at most of its points, and aside from various oddities) some of the Mormon faiths more interesting ideas and doctrines are laid out.
Back to the BOM - If one were to just read the BOM, and compare it say, with reading it's closest religious literal counterpart, the Bible, it is obvious that the BOM as a whole, is a complete fabrication and written by one, single author. When you read the OT or NT, regardless of who you believe who wrote one book, JEDP theory and redaction aside,it is clear that when you read different books, you get different writing styles. Romans and Habakkuk have little commonality in writing style - or any other two books that are written by two different authors. It's plain and obvious. The BOM, however, does not contain this litererary quality. The same phrases, the same plagiarism of certain NT quotes and quips are used with such frequence that they quickly become mind numbing. This is not to mention the differences of social location - which, the BOM SHOULD contain, given it's time span.
Which brings me to my next point. If one reads this with any decent familiarity with the Bible, one can go through the BOM (as I did) with a pen or highlighter and highlight on every single page, quotes which are stolen directly from the Old or New Testament. They're obvious forgeries and plagiarisms. Often times it's like reading the paper of a lazy student who just refuses to cite his sources, chaging one word or phrase in a quote to make it look original. And it's this cover up that gives the BOM is lacks of originality, it's part and parcel of what makes this book so difficult to get through, IMHO.
When you compare Smith's writing style in the BOM w/some of the DC's which are not written by him, but written by, say Brigham Young, or of Smith's grandson (I think it is his grandson), once can immediately discern a different writing style. But it is not so w/the actual BOM. Once you get through the DC's and read on to the Book of Moses or Abraham, the same tedious writing style quickly returns.
Concerning all of the stories that would supposedly leave any empirical evidence of the early Mormons, there is clearly no modern archaeological or anthropological evidence to purport any of its claims. The BOM is basically cyclical - various groups obey God for a time, disobey and different groups of people constantly go to war with one another, attempting to wipe out the other group. It's the common theme to the entire BOM. Eventually we're left with these incredible battles where mililons at one time are slaughtered, not to mention the hundreds or thousands or millions who perished before this one great battle. And of course no evidence of these has ever been found. Such supposed links with the early Moundbuilders or other groups fails outright, for dates simply to not match up (the Moundbuilders were around thousands of years before the BOM), hence the confusion of present Mormon 'archaeology' or 'anthropology' of actually where the Mormon lands are located. Not to mention the genetic evidence that we have that the first settlers came from Asia (excluding some of the newer discoveries of early American archaeology, which give a different interpretation of how some of these people groups arrived here).
Speaking as a Christian, it's fairly easy IMO to read the next to last work, Joseph Smith's History (like a miniature biography) and simply conclude that Smith had some kind of demonic encounter - several actually. Now, if you're not a Christian, or not interested in talking about things like that, then this part of my critique is not that important. Feel free to pass right over it. But it's quite clear that the goal of the triple is to commutate orthodox Christianity. And that it does, all the while using Christian language often cleverly redefined to be close enough to what the original ideas once resembled that it's hard to tell the difference for some.
All in all, for the Christian, it's worth a read, if for nothing less than Mormon evangelsitic encounters. A common way that Momron's will tell you to approach the BOM is to pray that God will make known its truth to you (more or less), or by a 'burning in the bosom' or something similar (which I did btw, and got nothing). In fact, I think all Christians should read it, if for nothing else, to be at least able to dialogue with Mormons on their own faith.
While the quality of the book was itself sufficient, the truth is that the majority of the material contained therein is fallacious. For example, in the Pearl of Great Price another account of Abraham is supposedly revealed, and with images in facsimile which are meant to represent the account given in the book. The facsimiles are actually common Egyptian funeral papyri which have nothing to do with Abraham. Joseph Smith even tried to label them according to his account, but a quick search of Egyptian deities and mythology reveals that he got every single one of his labels wrong. In short, this is the work of a charlatan, and not a very good one at that. Joseph Smith was a con man and his writing bears record of it for those who care to see it. In short, I would not recommend this book for anyone.
Bar none, the BEST book on this earth right now.

Adventure
If you like adventure check this book out. It starts with an epic journey through the desert followed by months on rough and never-ending seas where they almost capsize and die right there, all to end in a land that is so new, so alien that man had never before set foot on it. But that's not the end of the book. In time a whole civilization is built upon this fertile new land. New beasts are discovered and tamed for their use. Giant buildings grow, and the finest wares are sold in markets all over. But great prosperity leads to greed and desires for ultimate power. Soon a murderous sect unfolds and they bind together with others like themselves with a pledge to uphold each other's devious secrets as they work together to uproot the free republic and take over to rule in their wanton, grievous, and ever-suppressing ways.
With spies and wars and rumors of wars among this people it is surprising to find miraculous prisoners who defy their evil captors by escaping in the coolest, sneakiest, most awesome ways you've NEVER known! This with sword fighting, armor wearing, enemy killing, super-powered, victorious good guys makes this the book for you! Find out how men can walk through fire without getting burned, or how to crumble a building with a gesture, or how to confuse and confound your enemies with only your words!
The superpowers of a man named Nephi defies everything we've seen in this land thus far as he raises his brother from the dead after he had been stoned to death hours before! Then, as if the very earth itself is crying out from these crimes against nature, the whole continent gets plunged into darkness for three agonizing days' time. Earthquakes, volcanoes, tempests, and even meteors destroy the land for three solid HOURS! Most of the evil that had corrupted the land gets wiped out in this.
After all this dies down and the people begin to rebuild they find that they have powers beyond explanation and works of wares that had never before been seen. They continue to fight their enemy, who despite being crippled from the horrific events that had capsized the land, finds a way to get a strong hold back in the lives of these good people.
But can a people with such amazing super-powers prevail forever against the works of the most devious and unrelenting super-villain of all time?

Inspiring real life stories
On the flip side if you prefer inspiring true stories of real people going through tough situations and coming out ahead because of their strength and dedicated perseverance in very difficult times when the world seems against them, then this is the book for you.

Historical Archive
Perhaps you enjoy real life history. This is set in South America and is recorded by a group of people calling themselves the Nephites. This involves their trials and tribulations as they try to stick and follow a way of life that centers around the idea of selfless service and deepest love to all around them. Many admit they find the way too hard and they crumble. Others stand firm, making it work for them but not without going through strict regulations and severe hardships. It is an intense read on the very real life of millions of people living in a time far separated from ours, yet going through some of the same things in their day that we face in ours.

Spiritual
This is a very spiritual book as well and focuses on Jesus Christ, the true and living son of our Father in Heaven, even a prophet sent by God to teach and lead a people to finding eternal life with their God when they die. The very lives of these people depend on their relationship with their beloved Savior. We watch as their everyday actions lead the people on their path through life. They are not always where God wants them and this book is a play by play of where such actions can lead. It is a great way to understand how to stand for truth in a world that is not ready to receive it, to be strong when you feel like crumbling and knowing you have support when you are threatened by an adversary who will stop at nothing to secure your soul in any way he can. Their experiences are enlightening and touching; truthful and utterly amazing and very awe inspiring.

Perhaps you enjoy romance
The love a particular woman in this book has for her husband leads her to be proclaimed by a servant of God as to be "a woman with the most faith among all their people". Read this book to see how her love for her husband led to this proclamation. Read also to see how the love of our Savior eclipses all love that has ever existed and how lust is nothing compared to the deep, pure love we can have for each other when we learn how to serve with all our hearts and souls.

Whatever your preference for reading, this is a book for all it seems.

One other note, perhaps the most important

There is a promise by a prophet of the true Heavenly Father that if we read this book and make it part of our every day regime that the powers of heaven will be poured out upon you in such abundance that there will be not enough room to receive them. Life will be happier, rough times will be more bearable, and hardships won't be so encompassing.
This promise alone has kept me reading when all other reasons to read the book fall away due to migraines and the smallness of the print. Not that it is particularly small print, just that when I have a migraine I don't like to read anything. Thus that promise is everything to me. It can be amazing for anyone who reads it. I promise you that this promise is not without merits and it WILL come true. Everyday for a month. -And keep a journal ;) You will WANT the difference recorded! If not to prove to yourself, but to remind you how great it was that one time you read that book every day for a whole month! You will have the BEST MONTH EVER!!! Well, at least easiest =D

What book is this you ask? Why, it's the Book of Mormon... Of course! ;)
These three books are, in addition to the Holy Bible, the Sacred Scriptures of the Restored Gospel of Jesus Christ and the only Standard Works. Inspiring, edifying, instructive, and faith building.
